Rucksacks 51L to 70L

Rucksacks 51L to 70L - Bergens, Expedition & Multi-Day Packs

Past 50L you are carrying days, not hours. This band covers multi-day routes, expedition loads, Gold expeditions and the kind of field use where you carry shelter, sleep system, cooking kit and several days of food at once. Frames get stiffer, hip belts get wider, and load transfer becomes the thing that decides whether the pack is bearable on day three.

Highlander covers most of the range: the Pinnacle 70L as the largest, the Novar 60+5L and 50+5L, the Ben Nevis Men's 52L, the Ivar Men's and Women's 50+5L, and the Forces Elite Pack 66L for military and cadet use. The "+5" figures are lid extensions, so those packs grow when the lid is packed out. Sierra Designs covers the adjustable end with the Flex Capacitor 40-60 and 60-80.

Shop by brand, including Highlander, Sierra Designs, Kelty, Pentagon Tactical and Vango.

What you'll find in this collection

• Expedition rucksacks with load-bearing hip belts and adjustable backs
• Military-pattern bergens for exercise and extended field use
• Extendable lids that add capacity when needed
• Men's and women's specific back lengths
• Side compression and external attachment for mats, poles and roll mats

A loaded pack of this size is only as comfortable as its fit, so check the back length before the volume. Line it with a pack liner or dry bag, because at multi-day weights a soaked sleeping bag is a trip-ending problem rather than an inconvenience.

Ideal for

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 50+5L mean?

50L in the main body, plus roughly 5L more when the extendable lid is raised. It gives you headroom on the days you are carrying extra food or a bulky layer without buying a bigger pack.

Is 60L too big for a weekend?

Usually, yes. A part-empty pack carries badly because the load moves. If most of your trips are one or two nights, 31L to 50L will carry better.

What is a bergen?

The military term for a large-capacity rucksack, typically with a rigid frame, a substantial hip belt and side pouches or MOLLE for expanding the load. In practice it means an expedition pack built for field use rather than hill walking.

How do I stop the weight sitting on my shoulders?

Load the heavy items close to your back and level with your shoulder blades, then fasten the hip belt first and take the shoulder straps up afterwards. Most of the weight should sit on your hips.
