What to look for
Start with the ground you walk on. Wet, rocky hill days call for a supportive boot with a deep lug pattern and a waterproof membrane. Site and yard work needs a safety rating, a steel toe and a sole that shrugs off oil. Country walks, shooting days and the drive between jobs are better served by a dealer or Chelsea boot you can pull on one-handed.
Then look after them. Gaiters keep mud, water and heather out of the boot top and stop trouser hems soaking through on the hill. Round laces hold a knot better than flat ones under load, and a tin of polish plus five minutes with a brush will add a season or two to a leather upper. A breather boot bag stops damp kit sitting in the back of the car all week.
Fit is the part most people rush. Wear the socks you actually walk in, leave a thumb's width in front of your toes, and check your heel does not lift when you push up a slope.
