Snugpak Softie Elite 4 Sleeping Bag WGTE

The Snugpak Softie Elite 4 WGTE is a cold-weather mummy sleeping bag rated to -10°C comfort and -15°C low. It is built for people who are out when the ground is frozen: winter exercises, cold-weather training and sub-zero nights under canvas, where the bag has to hold its warmth all night rather than most of it.

A bag rated this cold usually costs you room to move. The Elite 4 answers that with a built-in deployable side baffle, sometimes listed as the Expanda Panel system. Zipped closed, it sits as a thick insulated baffle behind the zip and seals heat in. Deployed, it adds 12.5cm of girth at the chest and knee, taking the chest from 75cm to 87.5cm and the knee from 60cm to 72.5cm, for room to shift position or to dump heat on a milder night. The two way YKK side zip runs on anti snag webbing, so working it in the dark with cold hands does not mean fighting the fabric.

Fit adjusts as well. The bag is 220cm long and takes users up to 190cm, and foot shortening clips fold away the empty space below your feet, which is where a too long bag quietly loses its warmth. The foot section is internally reinforced so it can be slept in with boots on, the hood pulls in with an elasticated drawcord, and an internal valuables pocket keeps essentials on you overnight.

The warmth itself comes from Softie insulation working with a metallised Reflectatherm lining that reflects body heat back at you, behind a Paratex Micro outer that adds water resistance. Cold-weather insulation carries a weight penalty and this bag is honest about it: 1950g, packing to 28 x 24cm in the included compression stuff sack, with hanging tabs for airing it out afterwards. It comes in Olive Green with a left side zip.

If your nights sit closer to -5°C than -10°C, the Softie Elite 3 gives you the same adaptable design in a lighter, smaller package. Whichever you choose, put an insulated sleeping mat under it: a comfort rating only holds if the ground is not pulling heat out from underneath.
