Nightfox Night Vision Goggles Compared: Swift, Max, 2 and 2 Pro

It is properly dark, you are moving over ground you do not know, and you want both hands free. That is the job every goggle in the Nightfox Swift range is built for. The question is which one, and the model names do not help you much: Swift, Swift Max, Swift 2, Swift 2 Pro. Two of those are closer to each other than the numbering suggests, and one difference between them matters far more than the rest.

This guide sets the four head-mounted goggles side by side on the specs that change how they perform in the field, explains what the 940nm infrared option actually buys you, and covers where the Prowl monocular fits if goggles are not the right shape for your use. No jargon, real numbers.

First, an expectation to set. These are digital night vision devices, not analogue image-intensifier tubes like issued NVGs. A digital device reads light through a sensor and shows you a screen, so in genuine total darkness it needs its infrared LED switched on to see anything at all. That is normal and every unit here has IR built in. What you get in exchange is a fraction of the cost of tube kit, recording on some models, and no risk of burning a tube by pointing it at a light.

Two platforms, not four models

The clearest way to read this range is as two pairs rather than a four-step ladder.

The Swift and Swift Max share one platform: 1x optics, a 40 degree field of view, a 640 x 480 sensor, a single 850nm infrared LED, an integrated battery and a 360g weight. The Swift Max is not a new device, it is the Swift with the things that were missing in the field added back in.

The Swift 2 and Swift 2 Pro share a different platform: a wider 54 degree field of view, a 1080p sensor, dual 850nm and 940nm infrared, a replaceable 18650 battery and a 373g weight. The Pro is the Swift 2 with recording.

So there are really two decisions to make, in this order. First, do you need what the Swift 2 platform does that the Swift platform cannot? Second, within whichever platform you land on, do you need the extras that the higher model adds? Everything below is aimed at those two questions.

    The 940nm question: range or invisibility

    If you read one section, read this one. It is the single biggest capability difference in the range and it has nothing to do with picture quality.

    Infrared light is invisible to the naked eye, but not quite. An 850nm LED produces a faint red glow at the front of the unit that another person can see if they look your way, and that anyone else wearing night vision can see clearly from a long way off. It is the brightest option and it gives you the most range, which is why every model here has one.

    A 940nm LED sits further along the spectrum, far enough that the glow is close to invisible even up close. The trade is efficiency: sensors are less sensitive at that wavelength, so the same power gets you less distance. On the Swift 2 and Swift 2 Pro that means around 90m on 940nm against 130m on 850nm.

    Whether that matters depends entirely on what you are doing.

    • It matters a lot for airsoft and night games, where a red glow on your face tells the other team exactly where you are. It matters for wildlife and ecology work, where you do not want to disturb what you are watching. It matters for security and any observation task where being spotted defeats the point.
    • It matters very little for night navigation, camp tasks, garden and yard checks, or general moving about in the dark. Nobody is looking for you, so the brighter, longer-reaching 850nm is simply the better tool.

    The Swift 2 and Swift 2 Pro let you switch between the two as the task changes. The Swift and Swift Max give you 850nm only. If covert use is part of why you are buying night vision at all, that decides the platform for you before any other spec comes into it.

    Two numbers separate the platforms visually, and they compound.

    The first is field of view: 40 degrees on the Swift and Swift Max, 54 degrees on the Swift 2 and Swift 2 Pro. All four are true 1x magnification, which is what keeps your sense of distance natural while you are walking, so the wider figure is not zooming out, it is genuinely showing you more at the same scale. Through a 40 degree view you are aware of what is in front of you. Through 54 degrees you have a much better idea of what is beside you, which is what you want when you are moving rather than observing from a fixed spot.

    The second is sensor resolution: 640 x 480 against 1920 x 1080. That is a large jump in detail, but the more useful consequence is sensitivity. The 1080p sensor gathers light better, which means you can run the infrared LED at lower power and still see clearly. That does three things at once: less glow for anyone to spot, longer battery life, and less of a giveaway on the 850nm setting.

    The screens differ too, 320 x 240 against 480 x 360, so the sharper image is not lost on the way to your eye.

    All four have a 2x digital zoom, which is handy for a closer look at something static. Treat it as a bonus rather than a reason to choose: digital zoom crops the sensor rather than adding detail, and it is more useful on the 1080p models for exactly that reason.

    This is the difference people notice a year in rather than on day one.

    The Swift and Swift Max run an integrated 3000mAh cell, charged over micro USB. Both can run from a USB power bank while you use them, which in practice removes the runtime limit if you are happy with a cable to your pocket. When the cell eventually degrades, though, the device degrades with it.

    The Swift 2 and Swift 2 Pro take a standard 18650 3200mAh cell that you can replace. That means two things: a spare cell in a pocket gives you a field swap instead of a night cut short, and the goggles outlive the battery. On the Swift 2 Pro the swap needs a screwdriver, which is worth knowing if you are planning on doing it in the dark.

    Runtimes are around three hours on the Swift, over three on the Swift Max and around four on the Swift 2 pair, all with mixed infrared use. Run the IR harder and every figure comes down.

Recording: do you need it?

Only the Swift 2 Pro records. It captures HD video with audio to the 32GB card included in the box, and that is the entire reason it exists: the chassis, sensor, optics and dual IR are shared with the Swift 2.

Recording earns its place if you need footage rather than just a view. That covers ecology and wildlife surveys where timestamped video is the deliverable, security and land checks where you may need evidence, tactical training where after-action review is the point, and anyone making content. If none of those describe you, the recording is weight and cost you will not use, and the Swift 2 is the same device without it.

Swift or Swift Max?

Same optics, same sensor, same weight, same battery. The Swift Max adds four things, and three of them are about actually using the thing in the dark.

The wraparound rubber eyepiece is the significant one. A screen 20mm from your eye throws light back onto your face, and on the base Swift some of that escapes. The Max seals against your face and stops it, which matters for the same reason 940nm matters: not being seen. It is also more comfortable over a long session.

The helmet adaptor is included in the box on the Max. On the base Swift there is a GoPro-style rail on the housing that accepts a G24 dovetail adaptor, but the adaptor is a separate purchase. If you intend to helmet-mount, factor that in when comparing the two.

The green filter mode is a firmware option that renders the image in classic night vision green, which most people find easier on the eyes over time and which cuts screen glare. The upgraded head strap is the fourth, and it is the one you will care about least until hour three.

Range nudges up from 70m to 80m, which is real but modest. Buy the Max for the eyepiece and the included adaptor, not for the extra 10m.

What about the Prowl monoculars?

Goggles are not the only shape night vision comes in, and for some uses the monocular is the better answer. The Nightfox Prowl 2 is worth a look if any of the following apply.

It is the only unit here with swappable lenses, taking the field of view from 55 degrees to 70 or 105 degrees in seconds. That 105 degree fisheye is a genuinely different experience indoors and in close quarters, where a 40 or 54 degree view feels like looking down a tube.

It is also sealed to IP65, which means sustained rain rather than the odd shower, and it is the lightest option at 310g. It records, its 3500mAh cell is removable without tools, it charges over USB-C through a rainproof port, and its Sony IMX662 sensor runs at 60fps for lower latency when you are moving quickly.

The trade is that a monocular covers one eye. That preserves your natural night vision in the other, which many users prefer for long observation and for moving between lit and unlit areas, but it takes some getting used to and it gives you a flatter sense of depth than a binocular-style goggle. If you are buying primarily for airsoft close-quarters play or wet weather work, look at the Prowl 2 before the Swift 2.

Getting more range: infrared torches

Every figure in the table above is what the built-in LED delivers. Add a separate infrared torch and you can push well past it, which is the cheapest way to upgrade any of these devices.

The choice mirrors the 940nm question. An 850nm torch gives you maximum reach for observation where being seen does not matter. A 940nm low-glow torch extends range while keeping you close to invisible, and it is the accessory that turns a Swift or Swift Max into something usable for covert work despite having no 940nm LED of its own. Both are focusable, so you can flood a wide area or throw a tight beam.

If you are helmet-mounting, the Nightfox N247 helmet mount is the part you need alongside the dovetail adaptor.

Which Nightfox should you buy?

Choose the Swift if you want hands-free night vision for navigation, camp tasks, wildlife watching at close range or checking the yard, and you are not trying to stay hidden. It is the simplest way into head-mounted night vision, there is nothing to fiddle with, and 70m is plenty for close-quarters movement. Remember the helmet adaptor is extra if you need one.

Choose the Swift Max if you like the simplicity of the Swift platform but you want the light-sealed eyepiece, the green filter and the helmet adaptor in the box. For airsoft on the Swift platform this is the one to have, because the sealed eyepiece stops your own screen giving you away.

Choose the Swift 2 if you want the best view in the range without paying for recording. The 54 degree field of view, 1080p sensor and switchable 850nm and 940nm infrared are a serious step up, and the replaceable battery means it lasts. This is the sensible default for most buyers who are serious about it, and it is the one to pick for airsoft, security and wildlife work where covert illumination matters.

Choose the Swift 2 Pro if you need footage. Ecology surveys, evidence, after-action review, content. Everything good about the Swift 2 carries over, plus HD recording with audio and a padded strap.

Choose the Prowl 2 if you want the widest possible view indoors, genuine rain sealing, the lightest unit, or you prefer keeping one eye on natural night vision.

  • Yes, with the infrared LED on. That is how digital night vision works, and every model here has IR built in. In partial light, moonlight or ambient glow from a town, you can often run with the IR off or low, which extends battery life and reduces your signature.

  • They will show a picture in daylight, but that is not what they are for and you gain nothing over your own eyes. Switch the IR off if you do use them in light conditions.

  • Only if you will use the recording. The two devices are otherwise the same platform, with the same optics, sensor, infrared array and field of view. If you are undecided, buy the Swift 2 and put the difference towards a 940nm infrared torch or a spare 18650 cell.

The bottom line

Ask yourself one question first: do you need to not be seen? If yes, you want the Swift 2 platform for its 940nm infrared, or a 940nm torch alongside a Swift Max. If no, the Swift platform does the job for less, and the Swift Max is the version of it worth having.

After that it is simple. The Swift 2 is the best view in the range, the Swift 2 Pro is the same device plus recording, and the Prowl 2 is the one to consider if a monocular suits your use better than goggles.
