The Snugpak SJ12 Jacket WGTE is a UK-made extreme-cold insulated jacket and the warmest in Snugpak's Softie Jacket range. Rated to -15°C comfort and -20°C low, it is built for arctic, mountain and severe winter conditions, working either as a standalone layer or as part of a multi-layer system. Maximum Softie Premier fill, an extended body, a scooped back and a permanent insulated hood give continuous coverage and warmth when the temperature really drops.

The Paratex Micro outer is windproof, breathable and water-repellent, and the Paratex Light inner with a TS1-lined collar keeps things comfortable at the neck. A two-way YKK front zip with an insulated chin guard controls ventilation without losing warmth, and hook-and-loop arm patches suit identification or morale patches. At 1260g it packs into the supplied mesh-bottomed compression sack at 36 x 20cm.

Four SJ jackets, one 5°C step apart. All four share the same Softie Premier fill, the same Paratex Micro outer and the same technical cut, so what separates them is how much insulation is in them and what that costs you in weight. The SJ12 is the warmest, -15°C comfort at 1260g, and the only one with an extended body and a scooped back. The SJ9 Jacket is one step down at -10°C and 1010g, in the same 36 x 20cm pack, so the SJ12 buys you a step of warmth and extra length for 250g rather than extra bulk. The SJ6 Jacket is the midweight at -5°C and 760g, and the SJ3 Jacket is the lightest at 0°C and 580g.
The SJ range is not the whole choice at -15°C, and the other one also has the extended back. The SJ12 and the Tomahawk both run -15°C comfort and -20°C low, and both add length at the rear rather than stopping at the waist. The SJ12 is UK-made at 1260g with a permanent insulated hood. The Tomahawk Jacket is 1185g with a detachable insulated hood that carries a protective peak for driving wind and rain, so it is the one to take if you want the hood off or a peak over your eyes.
If you know the Softie sleeping bags, the numbers do not line up. Every SJ jacket is rated one full step warmer than the Snugpak sleeping bag carrying the same number. This SJ12 is rated -15°C comfort, which is the rating of the Softie 15 Sleeping Bag, not the Softie 12. Worth knowing if you are matching a jacket to a bag.
It sits a lot longer than the other SJ jackets, and it is worth checking by how much. Snugpak's back length for the SJ12 runs 83cm at Small to 101cm at XXL, roughly 12cm more than the SJ9 at every size. That is the extended body and scooped back doing their job, but it is a real difference in how the jacket wears. The SJ12 size guide gives chest, sleeve length and back length for every size. Wearing a midlayer underneath? Go one size up, because the chest figures are body measurements that allow for a base layer, not for a fleece or a softie jacket under the shell.
