The Snugpak SJ9 Jacket WGTE is a UK-made heavyweight insulated jacket built for cold winter conditions where you want maximum warmth and weather protection in one layer. Part of Snugpak's Softie Jacket range, it carries a higher fill weight than the midweight models and swaps the roll-away hood for a permanent insulated hood that is always there when you need it.

Rated to -10°C comfort and -15°C low, it works as a standalone layer in harsh winter conditions or as an outer over a layering system in extreme cold. The windproof, water-repellent Paratex Micro outer and TS1-lined collar keep the weather and draughts off, and a two-way YKK front zip with an insulated chin guard controls ventilation without losing warmth. At 1010g it packs into the supplied mesh-bottomed compression sack at 36 x 20cm.

Four SJ jackets, one 5°C step apart. All four share the same Softie Premier fill, the same Paratex Micro outer and the same technical cut, so what separates them is how much insulation is in them and what that costs you in weight. The SJ9 is the heavyweight, -10°C comfort at 1010g, and the first in the range with a permanent insulated hood rather than a roll-away one. The SJ6 Jacket is one step down at -5°C and 760g, packing smaller at 31 x 18cm. The SJ3 Jacket is the lightest at 0°C and 580g. The SJ12 Jacket goes one step further to -15°C at 1260g, adding an extended body and a scooped back for the same 36 x 20cm pack.

The SJ range is not the whole choice at -10°C, and the hood is the deciding factor. The SJ9 and the Spearhead both run -10°C comfort and -15°C low. The SJ9 is UK-made at 1010g with a permanent insulated hood that is always there. The Spearhead Jacket is the tactical cut at 940g, and its insulated hood zips off entirely, which also lets it pack smaller at 33 x 18cm against the SJ9's 36 x 20cm.

If you know the Softie sleeping bags, the numbers do not line up. Every SJ jacket is rated one full step warmer than the Snugpak sleeping bag carrying the same number. This SJ9 is rated -10°C comfort, which is the rating of the Softie 12 Sleeping Bag, not the Softie 9. Worth knowing if you are matching a jacket to a bag.

Wearing a midlayer underneath? Go one size up. These jackets are cut to a technical fit, and Snugpak's chest figures are body measurements that allow for a base layer, not for a fleece or a softie jacket under the shell.
