Snugpak Scorpion 2 IX Tent WGTE

The Snugpak Scorpion 2 IX WGTE is a lightweight, four-season two-person tent built for dependable shelter in exposed, unpredictable conditions. Its fly-first pitch and opposing aluminium pole design let you raise the shelter fast and keep the inner dry while you pitch, and the sleek, low-profile angled shape sheds wind well and helps keep condensation down. A 5000mm hydrostatic head flysheet and groundsheet, both PU coated with taped seams, hold off heavy rain, snow and wet ground.

Inside, the 205 x 110cm floor sleeps two in a head-to-toe arrangement, with a large front porch for packs, boots and kit. The No-See-Um mesh inner at 1600 holes per square inch keeps insects out while air moves through three mesh vents, and the 7001 anodised aluminium poles keep things strong and stable at low weight. It weighs 2.7kg, packs to 43 x 19cm and comes complete with 16 alloy Y-stakes, a repair kit and a compression bag.

Choosing between this and a three-season 2 man tent comes down to where you camp. Three-season shelters are lighter and pack smaller, which suits summer routes and sheltered, low-level pitches. The Scorpion 2 IX earns its extra weight when the ground is open and the weather turns, with a lower profile, a stronger pole set and 5000mm protection at both the fly and the groundsheet.

Pitching is stake-and-buckle. The supplied alloy Y-stakes run through the webbing loops at each pole grommet, and the inner tensions on side-release buckles. Snugpak's pitching instructions use no guy lines and none are supplied, so there is less to rig in the dark and less to catch in wind.
