Pick by pocket first. The X18 Ultra Mini and L28 Mini are keyring and coin-pocket lights, the sort you actually carry every day rather than leave in a drawer because they are too bulky. At £10.99 and £11.99 they are cheap enough to keep one in the car and one in the coat.

The X60 and X60-T sit in the middle and are the sensible general-purpose choice for dog walks, camping and looking under the bonnet. The TN02 Tactical is the one with a firmer grip and a beefier body if you want something that takes knocks.

The D30 Rescue Torch is the outlier and the most interesting light here. It is built for people who turn up when things have gone wrong, so it is the pick if you work in fire, rescue or recovery, or you just want something dependable in the boot for a breakdown on an unlit road.
