Snugpak Scorpion 3 IX Tent WGTE

The Snugpak Scorpion 3 IX WGTE is a four-season, three-person tent built for dependable shelter in exposed conditions. Its fly-first pitch raises the shelter quickly in wet weather while keeping the inner dry, and the low-profile angled shape sheds wind and helps keep condensation down. A 5000mm hydrostatic head flysheet and groundsheet, both PU coated with fully taped seams, hold off sustained rain through the year.

The 220 x 175cm inner sleeps three head-to-toe, with a large front porch for packs and kit, while the No-See-Um mesh inner at 1600 holes per square inch keeps insects out and three mesh vents move air through. Lightweight 7001 anodised aluminium poles keep the trail weight to 2.93kg without giving up stability, and the tent packs to 43 x 21cm in the supplied compression bag with 20 alloy Y-stakes and a repair kit.

Choosing between this and a three-season 3 man tent comes down to where you camp. Three-season shelters are lighter and pack smaller, which suits summer routes and sheltered, low-level pitches. The Scorpion 3 IX earns its extra weight when the ground is open and the weather turns, with a low-profile shape, 7001 alloy poles and 5000mm protection at both the fly and the groundsheet. If you are usually two up rather than three, the Scorpion 2 IX is the same build in a lighter, smaller package.

Pitching is stake-and-buckle. The 20 supplied alloy Y-stakes run through the webbing loops at each pole grommet, and the inner tensions on side-release buckles. Snugpak's pitching instructions use no guy lines and none are supplied, so there is less to rig in the dark and less to catch in wind. On stony or rough ground, the Snugpak Scorpion 3 Tent Footprint is cut to match the floor and takes the wear instead of the groundsheet.
