Description

The Highlander Falcon Bivvy Tent is a hooped bivvy that weighs just 1kg and packs to 37 x 10cm, making it the lightest and smallest-packing solo shelter in the Highlander range. For anyone travelling light on foot, by bike or by kayak, it gives you far more comfort than a flat bivvy bag with far less weight and bulk than a backpacking tent.

The two-hoop aluminium 7001 frame lifts the flysheet clear of your face and off your sleeping bag, which is the point of a hooped bivvy over a flat one. Over that sits a 75D 210T polyester ripstop flysheet rated to 4000mm with taped seams, above a fully sewn-in 190T polyester groundsheet rated to 5000mm. Those are the highest waterproof ratings of any Highlander solo shelter, tent or bivvy. A zipped mosquito mesh door and a two-way zipper with mesh vent let you manage airflow and condensation, it pitches as a complete unit or flysheet only, and a waterproof drybag stuff sack is included.

Be clear about what it is. The Falcon is a lie-down shelter with no porch. You cannot sit up inside it, and wet boots and packs either come in with you or stay out under a drybag. That is the trade for a shelter that disappears into a frame bag, and on a fast overnight or a bike trip it is a trade worth making. If you want to sit up or store kit under cover, look at the Blackthorn 1 Gen2 or the Respite 1.

Waterproof Hooped Bivvy Tent

    4000MM WATERPROOF

The Falcon runs a 75D 210T polyester ripstop flysheet rated to 4000mm hydrostatic head, over a fully sewn-in groundsheet rated to 5000mm. Those are the highest waterproof ratings of any Highlander solo shelter, tent or bivvy. Every seam is factory taped, so there is nothing to seal before your first night out.

The 5000mm floor matters more than people expect. On saturated ground most of the water that reaches you comes up from below rather than down from above, forced through the groundsheet by your own weight.

    VENTILATION AND CONDENSATION

Every small shelter collects condensation. You breathe out moisture all night, damp ground pushes more up from below, and on a cold clear night the fabric drops below dew point. The job is managing it, not eliminating it.

The Falcon gives you three ways to do that: a two-way zipper you can crack open at the top, a mesh vent that keeps air moving with the outer closed, and a zipped mosquito mesh door you can use on its own when the weather allows. Pitch where a little air moves, avoid hollows and long wet grass, and you will wake up drier.

    POLES AND PEGS

Two aluminium 7001 hoops give the Falcon its shape. Alloy flexes and recovers where fibreglass can go brittle and splinter in hard frost, and it saves weight at the same time.

It is not freestanding. Peg both ends out and the low profile sits steady in wind that would push a taller shelter around, which is what makes it work on exposed ground and for stealth pitches. Aluminium pegs are included, and the whole lot packs into a waterproof drybag stuff sack that doubles as dry storage once the shelter is up.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about the Highlander Falcon Bivvy Tent.

  • No. The Falcon is a lie-down shelter and does not pretend otherwise. The two aluminium hoops lift the flysheet clear of your face and off your sleeping bag, which is the whole point of a hooped bivvy over a flat bivvy bag, but you are horizontal for the duration. You get in, you sleep, you get out.

For a lot of trips that is exactly right, and it is why the Falcon weighs 1kg and packs to 37 x 10cm. If you want to sit up, look at the Blackthorn 1+ Gen2 at 83cm or the Refuge 1 at 90cm, which is the only Highlander solo shelter where an average adult sits up more or less properly.

  • Some, yes. Every small shelter produces condensation, and the smaller the air volume the more you notice it. You breathe out moisture all night, damp ground pushes more up from below, and on a cold clear night the fabric drops below dew point and it collects on the inside. This is physics, not a fault, and it is true of every bivvy and every solo tent.

What matters is how much you can manage it, and the Falcon gives you three things to work with:

    • The two-way zipper and mesh vent. Do not seal yourself in unless the weather forces it. Cracking the zip at the top and leaving the vent open lets moist air out and is the single biggest difference you can make.
    • The mesh door. When it is dry enough, close the mosquito mesh and leave the outer open. You keep the insects out and let the air move.
    • Flysheet-only pitching. In warm dry conditions you can pitch the fly alone for maximum airflow.

Siting helps as much as venting. Avoid hollows, long wet grass and ground right beside water, all of which sit in still, damp air. A pitch with a little breeze across it will always be drier than a sheltered one.

One thing worth being straight about: breathable is not the same as dry. On a cold, still, humid night you will find moisture on the inside of the fabric in the morning whatever you do. Wipe it down before you pack, and dry the shelter properly at home rather than storing it damp.

  • Neither, exactly. It is a hooped bivvy: a waterproof shelter with poles that hold the fabric off you, sitting between a flat bivvy bag and a solo tent. It pitches as a complete unit or flysheet only and has a zipped mosquito mesh door. Far more comfortable than a bivvy bag, far less room than a tent.

  • There is no porch, no vestibule and no covered side strip. The Falcon's outer dimensions are its inner dimensions. Boots, pack and anything soaked either come in with you or stay outside under a drybag.

On a fast overnight that is a non-issue. On a long wet trip it is the clearest reason to choose a shelter with covered storage instead, and the Respite 1 is the only Highlander solo shelter with a front porch you can genuinely use.

  • The Falcon is 245cm long, 80cm wide at the top and tapers to 50cm at the foot end. A standard sleeping mat around 51cm wide fits comfortably along the whole length. If you use a wide mat, check its width against that 50cm foot measurement before you buy, because the taper is where it will catch.

The 245cm length is generous, so height is not a constraint here at any normal build.

  • Usually not. Expedition kit lists generally specify a tent, often shared between two or three, and a lie-down solo shelter with no porch does not meet that brief. For DofE and school expeditions look at theBlackthorn 1 Gen2for a solo pitch, or a two-person tent shared. Check the kit list before ordering.

  • No. The seams are factory taped and the groundsheet is fully sewn in. The flysheet is rated to 4000mm hydrostatic head and the groundsheet to 5000mm, which are the highest ratings in the Highlander solo range.

  • No. The Falcon needs pegging out to hold its shape, so soft ground or good pegs are part of the plan and rocky pitches need a bit of thought. Aluminium pegs are included. In exchange you get a very low, aerodynamic profile that handles wind well for the weight.
