Goes well with

The Snugpak SJ6 Jacket WGTE is a UK-made midweight insulated jacket built for autumn, cool winter conditions and changeable weather where you want dependable warmth without much weight or bulk. Part of Snugpak's Softie Jacket range, it carries more Softie Premier fill than the lighter jackets in the range and adds hook-and-loop arm patches for unit or identification use.

Rated to -5°C comfort and -10°C low, it works as a standalone layer in cold conditions or as part of a layering system when it turns colder still. The TS1-lined roll-away hood drops in when the weather changes and stows away neatly when it does not, while a high neck and TS1-lined collar seal off draughts. At 760g it packs into the supplied mesh-bottomed compression sack at 31 x 18cm.

Four SJ jackets, one 5°C step apart. All four share the same Softie Premier fill, the same Paratex Micro outer and the same technical cut, so what separates them is how much insulation is in them and what that costs you in weight. The SJ6 sits in the middle, -5°C comfort at 760g, packing to 31 x 18cm, with a roll-away hood. The SJ3 Jacket is the lightest at 0°C and 580g if you mostly need a packable layer. The SJ9 Jacket is one step warmer at -10°C and 1010g, with a permanent insulated hood. The SJ12 Jacket is the warmest at -15°C and 1260g, with an extended body and a scooped back.
Six Snugpak jackets are rated -5°C, and none of them is warmer than another. The SJ range is not the whole choice here, and what separates the six is what they are. The SJ6 is the UK-made general-purpose one at 760g. The Arrowhead Jacket is the tactical cut at 820g. The Tactical Softie Smock is a UK-made pullover at 760g with side vent zips that reach a holster or belt kit without taking it off. The Torrent Jacket is the only waterproof one, 10000mm hydrostatic head with fully taped seams, at 950g. The Sleeka Elite is the lightest at 740g and cut relaxed to go over other layers, and the Sleeka Elite Reversible is that same relaxed cut at 790g with two outer faces. Three of the six have a hood and three do not: this jacket's rolls away, the Arrowhead's and the Torrent's zip off completely, and the two Sleekas and the Smock have none, just a drawcord collar that sits cleanly under a helmet or a shell.
If you know the Softie sleeping bags, the numbers do not line up. Every SJ jacket is rated one full step warmer than the Snugpak sleeping bag carrying the same number. This SJ6 is rated -5°C comfort, which is the rating of the Softie 9 Sleeping Bag, not the Softie 6. Worth knowing if you are matching a jacket to a bag.
Wearing a midlayer underneath? Go one size up. These jackets are cut to a technical fit, and Snugpak's chest figures are body measurements that allow for a base layer, not for a fleece or a softie jacket under the shell. Measure your chest, find your size in the SJ6 size guide, then take the next size up if you plan to layer or you come out at the top of a chest range. The guide gives chest, sleeve length and back length for this jacket specifically, because the SJ jackets differ from each other on both.
