Choosing your boots
Leather takes a bit of breaking in but rewards you with years of service and reproofs easily, which makes it the sensible pick for site work, farm jobs and long days on rough ground. Lighter synthetic and nubuck builds dry faster and suit summer hill walking, though they wear through quicker on abrasive rock. A waterproof membrane earns its keep anywhere in the Lakes or the Peaks, but pair it with a breathable sock or your feet will steam.
Ankle height comes down to load. High-cut boots support a heavy rucksack over uneven ground and stop your ankle rolling on scree. Mid or dealer height is plenty for dog walks, shooting days and driving between jobs. For site work, look for a steel toe cap and a midsole plate, and check the sole is rated for oil and slip.
Size up half a size if you wear thick walking socks, and try boots on late in the day when your feet have swollen a little.
