The Snugpak Special Forces 1 WGTE is a lightweight UK-made mummy sleeping bag rated to 5°C comfort and built as the outer bag of Snugpak's modular Special Forces sleeping system. A two-way centre zip allows rapid entry and exit, a deliberate operational choice over the side zip found on most civilian bags, and the reinforced foot section lets the bag be used with boots on when circumstances demand it.

Softie Premier insulation, a Paratex Steelplate outer backed by a Paratex Micro second layer and a Reflectatherm lining combine for dependable warmth in a highly compressible package that drops to just 16 x 16cm. On its own it covers mild, above-freezing nights; as part of the system it pairs with the Special Forces 2, which fits inside it to extend warmth into much colder conditions. It comes in Olive Green and Black.

Building a modular sleep system? The Special Forces 1 is the 5°C outer bag of Snugpak's modular system and pairs with the Special Forces 2 for colder nights. To see how the SF system compares with Snugpak's other bags, read our guide Snugpak Sleeping Bags Compared: Which One Is Right for You?.
Same rating, different bag: Special Forces 1 or Softie 3? The Softie 3 carries the identical 5°C comfort and 0°C low, and both are UK-made with the same Softie Premier fill and Reflectatherm layer. The differences are weight, cut and how you get in. This Special Forces 1 opens on a two-way centre zip for rapid exit, has a reinforced foot so it can be slept in with boots on, and takes the Special Forces 2 inside it to build a -15°C system. It is also cut wider, 80cm at the chest against 75cm, which is what makes room for the second bag. The Softie 3 is 300g lighter at 900g, opens on a side zip, and pairs left-to-right to make a double. If you are not building the system, the Softie 3 is the lighter carry.
Joining the two bags together: Zipping the Special Forces 1 and Special Forces 2 into a single -15°C system uses the Special Forces Zip Baffle, which Snugpak supplies as a separate item. We are adding it to stock shortly. Without the baffle the bags still layer one inside the other and each keeps its own zip.
The matching bivvi bag: the zips line up. The Special Forces 1 opens on a full-length two-way centre zip, and the Special Forces Bivvi Bag opens on a half-length zip in the same central position. It does not run as far as the bag's, but both openings sit front and centre, so you get into and out of the covered system from the front instead of working around a side zip. Snugpak lists the bivvi as suitable for the Special Forces system. Worth knowing when you compare: most of the Softie range is side-zip, so this is the bivvi that matches this bag.
