Rucksacks 71L and Over - Large Bergens, Expedition & Deployment Packs
Above 70L you are packing for a week or more, or for a full military load. This band is for extended expeditions, long exercises and deployments, winter trips where the sleep system alone fills half the pack, and anyone carrying kit for more than one person. At these weights the frame, the back system and the hip belt matter more than the litre figure.
Highlander covers the military end with two 90L-class bergens. The Pinnacle 90L is the flagship of the Pinnacle range, in 1000D nylon on a reinforced aluminium internal frame, with two detachable 6.5L side pouches and a MOLLE front pocket. The Forces Elite Pack 88L is the largest Forces Elite, in 900D fabric with an adjustable back, a removable hip belt and a lower compartment. Both carry Highlander's 282 Year Guarantee.
For trekking rather than field use, the Kelty Asher 85 has a perimeter frame with a centre stay and a torso adjustable from 39 to 53cm, and the Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor 60-80 expands from 60L to 80L on side gussets, then cinches back down when the load drops.
What you'll find in this collection
- 90L-class military bergens with internal frames and adjustable backs
- Detachable side pouches and MOLLE for expanding the load
- Load-bearing hip belts built for sustained heavy carry
- Expandable trekking packs that grow and shrink with the load
- Multiple access points, including lower compartments and side zips
A pack this size should be fitted loaded, not empty, so set the back length before you pack and fasten the hip belt before the shoulder straps. Line it with a pack liner or dry bag, and fit a Duck's Back rain cover, which comes in sizes up to 90L.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 90L rucksack too big?
For most hill walking, yes. 90L makes sense for trips of a week or more, winter loads, military exercise or carrying shared kit. A part-filled large pack carries badly because the load shifts, so if most of your trips are a few nights, 51L to 70L will carry better.
What is the difference between a bergen and a rucksack?
A bergen is the military term for a large rucksack, usually with a rigid frame, a heavy-duty hip belt and side pouches or MOLLE for adding capacity. Civilian expedition packs do the same job with lighter fabrics and more pockets.
How should I load a large pack?
Put the sleeping bag at the bottom, the heaviest items close to your back and level with your shoulder blades, and lighter bulky kit around them. Fasten the hip belt first so most of the weight sits on your hips, then take up the shoulder straps.
